Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
